The Science Behind the “Sugar Scaries”

The Science Behind the “Sugar Scaries”

Would the real crash culprit please stand up?

You know that 2 p.m. wall we try to avoid, but often still hit? It’s not you, and if you’ve had the experience sans coffee, you know it’s not just the caffeine either. It’s the sugar.

We named MycoMatcha™ for what goes in it, not for what's hiding in it. One of the biggest things we left out: added sugar. What follows is the honest science behind the Sugar Scaries (the afternoon cousin of the Sunday Scaries): what a sugar crash and a sugar hangover actually are, and why our custom matcha blend skips added sugar completely.

The sugar crash, explained

When you drink something loaded with added sugar (a sweetened coffee-shop matcha, a soda, a syrupy latte), your blood sugar spikes fast. Your body answers with a rush of insulin to clear it out. With no fiber, fat, or protein to slow things down, that clean-up can overshoot, and your blood sugar dips lower than where it started, usually two to four hours later. Researchers call it reactive hypoglycemia. You know it as the crash: shaky, foggy, tired, weirdly irritable, and somehow hungry again.

Wait, a "sugar hangover"?

The crash's next-day cousin. A high-sugar day can leave you groggy, headachy, and sluggish the morning after: a mix of blood-sugar swings, restless sleep, and dehydration. No tequila required.

Why coffee drinks make it worse

This is where matcha and coffee part ways. A sweetened coffee drink stacks two dips on top of each other: the sugar crash and the caffeine drop-off. Coffee's caffeine hits hard and leaves fast, so the comedown tends to land right about when your blood sugar is bottoming out. That's the 2 p.m. wall we’ve all run into a few too many times.

Why we left added sugar out

MycoMatcha™ has zero added sugar and zero artificial sweeteners. The gentle sweetness you taste is real food: Madagascar vanilla and Ceylon cinnamon, doing the job sugar usually takes credit for. And because matcha's caffeine comes paired with L-theanine (the amino acid that smooths energy into focus), your lift comes on slow and leaves quiet. No spike means nothing to crash from.

What steady actually feels like

Awake, not wired.

Focused, not frantic.

Calm, not sedated.

Flow state, activated.

Honesty is our policy. We're not in the business of health claims. Skipping added sugar won't fix everything, but it does mean your afternoon isn't riding a blood-sugar rollercoaster it never agreed to.

Have you asked what's in your matcha?

Most sweetened matcha drinks hide a dessert's worth of sugar behind that pretty green. Clean matcha shouldn't need it. Ours doesn't.
